A LEVEL ART AND DESIGN
This course gives a strong grounding for those interested in studying Art and Design foundation courses and degrees. It is also suitable for those with an interest in the visual world and for those who enjoy responding to and exploring art in its wider context.
In addition to developing your skills in a variety of media, you will also explore and develop ideas through contextual studies. You will learn about artists’ work, produce independent research and develop your own analytical skills. Visits to galleries and exhibitions are an essential part of the course.
Commitment, enthusiasm and the ability to work under your own initiative are essential if you are to get the most from this course.
You will have to be prepared to give a considerable amount of your time time to independent study outside of timetabled lessons to
produce a rich and varied portfolio of work.
Component 1: Portfolio and personal study (coursework - 60%)
Project 1 - Collections: You will explore ideas through researching images, artefacts and resources relating to a wide range of art, craft and design. Responding to these through practical and critical activities, you will write analyses of your own work and that of other artists. All students will be introduced to ideas, processes, materials and techniques relevant to different aspects of Art and Design (drawing, painting, life drawing, printmaking, mixed media and 3-Dlearning through practical explorations, workshop demonstrations and individual tutorials.
Project 2: Portfolio and personal study (coursework - 60%)
The course is a continuation and expansion of the methodology and realisations developed at AS. The coursework includes a practical portfolio of work, sketchbook illustrated study of an art or design topic of your own choice and detailed written essay .

Component 2: Set assignment (practical exam - 40%)
This will take place near the end of the course. By this stage, you will have evolved a personal style and will be able to integrate processes and practices to communicate ideas to support your focus of study. Assessment includes both preparatory work and work produced under examination conditions.
Possible progression: Students can go on to Art Foundation courses at college or the major art schools before degree courses in architecture, illustration, fine art, printmaking, photography, graphics, sculpture, 3-D design, fashion, printed textiles, woven textiles and stage design.
