City of London Festival 2011
YR11 BTEC Art and Design students have working on an exciting project with the City of London Festival. Each year students take thematic inspiration for their work from Festival's theme- this year was Oceania, studying Ta Moko traditions of the Maori people, a practice of body adornment. As part of the project, students worked with professional jewellers Petra Bishai and Rachel Terry. They learnt to research the theme, create designs and try out technical making skills and finally made their own stunning final jewellery piece using the specialist tools, materials and techniques. Designs were original, every student worked incredibly hard with enthusiasm and commitment throughout. Petra and Rachel were very impressed at how quickly they translated their 2-D designs into a stunning 3-D jewellery piece and how they learnt the technical skills of piercing, cutting, linking and riveting.
The final part of the project involved exhibiting their work at the Guildhall Gallery during the City of London festival.
On Monday 4th July 2011 Staff and students had a fantastic private view where they viewed their Jewellery in one of the gallery spaces in a beautiful cabinet making the pieces look incredibly regal amongst paintings dating from 1670 to the present.
During the event several presentations took place,
Sayeeda Firdaus 11S received a certificate of commendation.
Masum Ahmed 11P received the Festival Arts Award a double-sided and cast in bronze, Arts Award medals are presented to students across Festival Education projects to acknowledge and encourage outstanding commitment and quality of work.
