Facing East – portrait project at Three Mills Trust, within the Miller’s House
.
The artist Jane Wildgoose, Nesta fellow, worked with Bromley by Bow Centre Creative Arts Programme to create a series of individual portraits and personal stories whereby selected sitters choose a special object from their own lives and then they had their portrait taken with other objects that they choose from a temporary Museum created at Three Mills.
The objects for this Museum were curated from the diverse handling collections within East London Museums that were relevant to the local community. Jane Wildgoose specialises in work within the area of commemoration and memorial and has worked with Museums around their collections.
Along side this exhibition, Jane presented an introduction to her work and the project at Three Mills Trust to which St Paul's Way students responded with their own work, photography and their own writings.
The project explored ideas and themes present in personal stories, family history, and the relevance of collections.
Jane worked in the school over several sessions with the students to explore these ideas and the followed up the ideas with another 2 sessions taking place at Three Mills.
The work was exhibited at Three Mills and at the school, with students and guests attending both private views along with the key practitioners Jane Wildgoose, artist and Clare Palmier, writer and Head of Arts at Bromley by Bow Centre.
