IMT – ‘Open Axis’ Education Programme for schools 2006
- IMT’s Background, aims and activities
Year 10 Arts Award students took part in a workshop at the IMT Gallery in Bethnal Green. The workshop was run in conjunction with an exhibition by the artist Alexander Costello. His video installation was a starting point for the project and the students actually got to work with Costello to make
their own video. Costello's work was in response to different environments and sought to present the interaction between people, places and objects. He used different techniques found in painting, photography, film and performance to make his video. Students worked in groups and made a video in response to their visit to Victoria Park. Using their drawings from the park, the groups created a huge painting on the wall in the gallery. They were filmed making their painting and used perspex sheets to seemingly draw on the lens of the camera while it was recording. The end result was a performance piece which showed their interaction with the place through the practice of different techniques such as painting, drawing and film. This was an amazing opportunity for the young artists involved to explore
different ideas and practices with an established artist.
