Sense Of Place - Yr3 - Exhibition 2011
We have worked closely with the Chisenhale gallery for the last 3 year project on a cross school project based on exploring ideas in and around their local environment.
In year 1 we worked with Public works, the artist Torange worked with year 7 students, they explored their own personal places within the school environment and created a series of collages that were used for a series of postcards produced by the artist. A final semi permanent installation was created on the old school site. The site was visually exciting and made a part of the old school building look homely.
In year 2 we worked with Ruth Ewan, year 8 students worked on exploring local history which included the suffragettes and the matchstick girls. The students produced protest posters and went on a local history walk. The posters are still on display in the school.
In year 3 Yr9 students worked with Amalia Pica to produce sculptures that represented areas of Tower Hamlets. These sculptures were brightly painted and created a sense of fun. These were exhibited alongside the stunning carved sculpture by Amalia Pica at our own end of year show in the new school gallery.
Students in all year groups thoroughly enjoyed working with a range of contemporary artist. The experience has been invaluable for the department, the school and the students. As a direct result of third year experience nearly all the students opted to take a GCSE in either Art or Photography. The experience has been a resounding success and one that I will hope to echo in the future.
