LOVE YOUR VOICE @ MATT’S GALLERY
A Workshop Project initiated by artist Eva Weinmayr and Matt’s Gallery
for young people in Tower Hamlets, aged 15-18
PROJECT: SPW Students worked with a collection of Evening Standard news-stand posters, the artist Eva Weinmayr ran a series of workshops for a group of arts award students to creatively investigate the complex world of tabloid mass media, news wording and the formal aspects of news display. The investigation encouraged a ‘stepping-back’ from the aggressive modus operandi of mass media, and supported the students in an exploration of their own creative potential, discussing and enacting creative approaches to the matter of news reporting and consuming. The workshops encompassed creative writing, painting, drama, and performance.
The students used their posters to make an installation within the gallery space, which was used as a recording studio with microphones, amplifiers and speakers. Students took inspiration from the words used and stories created, to produce a series of improvisational sound recordings experimental voice piece within the space. They were able to explore the diversity of sounds they could make with their own voice and produced an improvisational and experimental voice piece which they recorded and were able to keep.
The workshop was an excellent opportunity for the Arts Awards students to gain experience within a different art form.
