Creative Connections

Whitechapel Gallery’s annual Artists in Residence programme offers an artist a unique opportunity to engage with the context of a secondary school across one academic year, stimulating new approaches to teaching and learning through contemporary art.
The resident artist devised a project in collaboration with teachers and young people and based on their own practice and open to the broadest range of visual art practices and approaches.
The aim is to engage students in a critical dialogue with contemporary art and the artist’s role in society, whilst developing skills in  visual literacy and critical enquiry.  By establishing  creative professional relationships between artists and  teachers over an academic year and hosting regular planning and practice sharing sessions at the Gallery,  the programme also provides valuable continuing professional development for teachers. Artists In Residence also aims to extend the breadth of the Art and Design Curriculum by including the most up-to-date art practices, whilst also developing skills in new media alongside more traditional art forms.

Artists, students and teachers will have the opportunity to  visit exhibitions held at the Whitechapel Gallery together during the period of the residency.
